1. Why did city planners decide to develop a new city?
Seoul is one of the most developed, but at the same time crowded cities in the world. Around 10 million people live there with a further 15 million people living in the city’s outskirts. So that lead the government to build a new city near Seoul, which is called Songdo.
2. How is Songdo different to many other cities.
Songdo is a really developed city. It uses technological innovations that make living there very comfortable. The green areas make up 40% of the city, also they use a really interesting technology to collect rubbish directly from peoples’ homes and so on. The Songdo project is the largest property development in history. It’s the city of the future.
4. Watch again. Complete the summary with the words in the box.
City developers are building Songdo on land which was underwater until some years ago. There are plenty of green spaces in the city, and there is a large park in the centre with skyscrapers all around it. Property developers have built 80,000 new homes as well as schools and a university. The city aims to watchpollution levels carefully by using technology to measure energy use and car use. Designers are also planning a system which will soon use the population’s waste and rubbish to generate renewable energy. Families like living here because there is so much space. Planners also hope that they will soon see more businesses in Songdo when transport links with Seoul are even faster.
Songdo is a city of the future, and it could become a model for many other cities around the world.
