The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, invented the airplane in 1903. After studying birds and testing gliders to learn how flight works, they built and flew the first plane, the Flyer, which could stay in the air, steer, and was powered by an engine. This historic flight took place in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where their plane stayed in the air for 12 seconds, covering more than 36 meters — the first controlled, powered flight.
