Navigate slide 29 Faking it, Review Last night’s TV.

9a. Work with a partner. Complete the tips in the blog using can/can’t, could/couldn’t, (not) manage to, (not) succeed in, and (not) be able to in the correct form.

  • Remember that you can choose to resist temptation if you want to.
Just because you couldn’t stop yourself yesterday, doesn’t mean you can never do it.
  • Think about something else. If you succeed in tunring your attention away from the chocolate for a while, you may forget about it altogether.
  • Stop for a minute. Perhaps you felt you couldn’t spare the timeto go for a run yesterday? But if you stopped and really thought about it, you’d see it was much more important than many of the things you did manage to do.
  • Think ahead. Plan for the future and you will succeed in achieving your goals.
  • Never buy things on impulse. Go home and think about it. If you really like it, you can still buy it tomorrow, or next week.
  • Spend time with people who are able to resist temptation themselves. Pick up some valuable lessons by observing someone whose patience you admire.

She reached out to me by texting. Victoria said that that day her and her family were invited to a dinner in a restaurant. There were many relatives of hers and one of them was a grandma. Her name was Susanna. Susanna turned out to be Victoria’s grandma’s cousin. It was the end of the dinner when Susanna started showing everyone her grandchildren’s pictures and telling about them when Victoria recognized someone’s face in the picture. It was my face and Susanna is my grandma. And that’s how we found out we were related.

That reminds me of another story I heard about a man who had a lucky escape. He was at a barbecue restaurant on top of a mountain, and after the meal he decided not to take the cable car down with his friends, but to walk down instead. While he was looking for the path, he fell into a stream and broke his leg. Unable to move, he tried to phone for help, but his mobile wasn’t working because he had dropped it in the stream. Knowing he was missing, teams of people were looking for him, but it was twenty-four days before they found him. Luckily he had brought a bottle of barbecue sauce with him to the barbecue, and he had survived by drinking water mixed with the barbecue sauce.

Outside you could see flashes of lightning across the sky and dark clouds. Suddenly there was a loud bang. At first a few people started screaming. But then the whole plane became strangely quiet. The pilot spoke to tell us we were about to land, which was a great relief to everyone. But just we landed, the whole plane started shaking violently again. In the end we landed safely. When we got off the plane, we saw that there was an enormous hole in the tail fin.

Distant friendships

Nowadays the internet has developed so much, that we can have many friends abroad, without even meeting them. There are many applications and sites where you can meet your distant friend, for example Facebook, Instagram and so on. Even though it’s better to have friends in real life, near you, online friends can also be close and trustful. But we should always remember, that there are bad people on internet, so we should be careful sharing our personal data to strangers.

In the past there was a tradition, when people had friends from other countries, and although they communicated only with letters, their friendship lasted long years. This friendships are called pen pals and it can be used now too.

Having a pen pal is a great way to practice reading and writing in a foreign language, improve your literacy, and learn about different countries and lifestyles. While traditional pen pals are less common nowadays due to the internet, you can still find pen pal clubs online or in magazines. These clubs bring people together with similar interests to make new friends online and exchange letters.
